Creating Time For Work and Motherhood

By Natalie Bracco, Working Mother

Whether you work from home or in the corporate world, motherhood calls for making adjustments and sacrifices. Your career will take a beating, and it may be a while before you get the ideal balance. Mothers have changed the course of their lives, some taking up blogging to help other new mommies deal with their challenges, or even just giving them an outlet to be heard. A blog not only becomes a source of income for you, but it also forms a forum where others can pour out their hearts and seek help. How do you make time to do work and be a mother?

Work From Home

Babies need round-the-clock attention and care, so you cannot work and take care of them effectively without compromising one. You could hire a nanny for the baby while you work so that you are close to them, but at the same time effectively fulfilling your obligation to your employer. This only applies if your job allows you to work from home.

Get In early and leave early

If the baby is asleep by the time you leave the house in the morning, you could get up and leave the office an hour or three before the usual reporting time. Working throughout the rest of the day without wasting too much time, you would manage to clear the in-tray before 5 pm. This way, you leave a few hours before everyone, avoid rush-hour traffic and get to spend time with the little one.

Learn To Delegate

A perfectionist may find this one hard to do. Delegating some duties may not be the easiest thing to do, but it will benefit you more if you let someone handle a few things on your list. You will not only free some of your time, but you will feel much lighter when you have fewer things to do. Do not forget that you will be helping your assistant to move up the corporate ladder.

Take Days Off

You may have never needed sick days off in the past since you hardly fell ill, but you may need them more now to attend to the baby. Those days when you need to take the baby for checkups could require that you be away from the office for hours or even the entire day.

Bring Them To Work

If your company has a ‘bring the baby to work’ day, you will want to take full advantage f it. If you don’t have the option, lobby that management slots it in, especially if there are other others in the company. This will not only help to work better knowing that your little one is within reach, but it will also mold them early in their lives.

Remember You

Don’t forget to look out for you. If you are going to do it all, you will need to be fit and healthy. Hit the gym, run a bit or do some yoga. A few trips the spa will not hurt you one bit.
